"Competence Center for Climate Change Digital Twin for Earth forecasts and societal redressement: DTEClimate"
SP2: Act4D-Eutrophication
Pilot case on Siutghiol Lake

Location
Siutghiol Lake, Romania

Key Facts
Lake Siutghiol is a generic sweet-water lake located on the Black Sea coast, being under the pressure of large tourism facilities, expanding urban agglomerations, agriculture, and related industries with a high degree of eutrophication.

Aim
The adaptation of different communities to Climate Change must have a strong emphasis on a transformative approach to reduction of anthropogenic pressures for a significant improvement of biodiversity. For this reason, the topic of biodiversity is mentioned in the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change, in the EU Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation as well as many other global initiatives. In the Act4D-Eutrophication project it shall be developed a holistic approach to address the adaptation to Climate Change of the communities located in the neighborhood of sweet-water lakes. The approach is based on scientific evidence and a strong interaction with the local communities and industries. For validation of the methodologies and procedures there were selected two generic cases of large lakes as Siutghiol – located on the Black Sea coast and the Bicaz lake located in the mountain area of the Carpathians.

Expected impacts
The Case Study provides a holistic and integrated approach that connects upstream land use with coastal ecosystems. Multipurpose NBSs emphasize that even small scale environmentally friendly interventions may have significant impact in resilience and adaptation to climate change. Furthermore, interventions in the Danubian Delta, like the evaluation of the resilience of biofiltration bacteria and new farming practices on salted soils, are expected to have significant impact in one of the most important European ecosystems. ARSINOE will also improve the linkage between forestry, agriculture, and water management sectors in the Black Sea. It involves a transition in forestry and watershed management and helps improve climate resilience. The strong part of the Case Study is the resilience it may provide to local communities, ecosystems and watersheds through environmentally friendly good practices, economic and ecologic benefits.
